This nebula was discovered by Caroline Herschel in 1787 and added to the catalog of his brother William as H VIII.77. Also known as SH2-142 is a nebular area surrounding the open cluster NGC 7380 it is named. This is an area of great activity in star formation, where light from young stars ionizes the surrounding gas causing it to glow. It is located about 8000 light years from Earth and its length is about 100 light-years.
